Through sculpture I express my ability to render physical and spiritual qualities of my subjects into form. I focus mainly on the human form and in particular on portraiture.
Humans are endlessly interesting and beautiful to me. The work is an attempt to share my vision of them, the beauty and wholeness I see in each person.
I take inspiration primarily from sculptors of the past , e.g. Bernini for his sensuality and movement, Michelangelo for his harmonious elegance and aliveness, their work imbued with a power and spirit that transcends time . I also love the mystery of Egyptian art, I can easily find the faces of the past reflected in the here and now.
Traditional materials like clay, wax and plaster are my preferred mediums to work in, and once the sculpture feels complete, I cast the final work into concrete, plaster or bronze. The tactile qualities of the materials matter greatly.
For the portraits we usually start with an in person studio session, so I can connect with and really get a feel for the subject, to establish an energetic rapport .
As part of the initial session I usually take a series of photographs from different angles. If there are other sources of information, like interviews, their writings or biographies I will take in that information as well during the process.
Ideally it is a collaboration between myself and the model, the subject’s presence and focus help create an energetic connection necessary for the sculpture to become more than a good likeness.
Sculptural portraits have a fascinating effect. Often it is the first time someone is looking at themselves in three-dimensional form. I can say that so far all of my subjects have been happily amazed.
